WebThe barracks, which were originally designed for use by cavalry, were built between 1794 and 1795. [1] The cavalry moved out to Maryhill Barracks in Glasgow in 1877 and the barracks were converted for infantry use. The conversion took place as part of the Cardwell Reforms which encouraged the localisation of British military forces. [2] Maryhill Barracks became the depot of the Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow) regiment in March 1921. In May 1934 a bomb exploded in the barracks, which was alleged to have been set off by the same person as bombed the Army Recruiting Offices, 139 Bath Street, a fortnight previously.
