WebBackground and purpose: Myelin water imaging (MWI) is a magnetic resonance imaging technique that quantifies myelin in-vivo. Although MWI has been extensively applied to study myelin-related diseases in groups, clinical use in individual patients is challenging mainly due to population heterogeneity. WebThus myelination can be estimated using only routine MRI examinations; no additional measurements of signal intensities are necessary. In order to obtain detailed information, ten regions of the brain are ranked separately, with comparisons of the T1- and T2-weighted images for each region.

Myelination, however, is not the only measure of brain development.
